そのカタカナ英語、要注意!『日本人が勘違いしているカタカナ英語120 (中公新書ラクレ)』

 「マンツーマン」「コスパ」「マニア」「ネック」「レベルアップ」「ドンマイ」他。カタカナ英語は日本人の生活に浸透している。しかし、中にはそのまま英語として使うと、意味が通じなかったり、不自然な意味になってしまうものも少なくない。本書は、そのようなものを120集めて、英語として使う場合にはどこがどうおかしいのか、どういう表現ならば通じるのかを、実際の例文とともに解説したものである。以下のようなものが取り上げられている。

 

  • アプリ→app, 例:What apps do you use most?
  • ポイントカード→a reward card / a loyalty card, 例:Do you have a rewards card?
  • フライングする→jump the gun, 例:He was disqualified for jumping the gun.
  • コンテンツ→content, 例:Netflix has a lot of content.
  • コスパ→a good value for the money / a good value for the price / reasonable, 例:The food here is a good value for the money.
  • パワースポット→a mystical place / a spiritual place, 例:Japanese people call mystical places like this ‘power spots’.
  • ツーショット写真→a picture of two people / a photo of two people, 例:I treasure this picture of me and my son.
  • スルーする→ignore / seen-zone, 例:I’ve been seen-zoned.

 

  • ブラック企業→an exploitative company / a bad company to work for, 例:There are a lots of bad companies to work for in this industry.
  • ペットボトル→a plastic bottle, 例:Do you recycle plastic bottles?
  • アットホームな→cozy, 例:We are going to a cozy little cabin in the mountains.
  • キャンペーン→a special offer / special promotion / sale, 例:Don’t miss our Mother’s Day Sale!
  • スキンシップ→tender loving care / physical contact, 例:Tender loving care is important for babies development.
  • リアクション→a response / an answer / a reply, 例:His response was not very enthusiastic.
  • ブランド品→designer goods / designer clothes, 例:She never dreamed she’d be able to afford designer shoes.
  • (体重が)リバウンドする→gain weight back / regain the weight, 例:I gained the weight back.
  • グッズ→items / things / stuff, 例:I forgot to buy cleaning stuff.
  • ドクターストップ→doctor’s order, 例:He quit smoking on his doctor’s orders.
  • ネック→a problem / one’s weakness / a holdup , 例:What’s the holdup?
  • フリーサイズ→a one-size-fits-all, 例:It’s one size fits all.

 

 「アプリ」のように、スマホ時代に使われる表現も出てくる。ひとつにつき2ページ使って書かれてあるので、解説としては比較的丁寧なものになっている。

 高度な英語の知識は必要なく、英検3級レベルくらいであれば問題はないと思われる。既に知っているものは多かったが、知らないことも少なくなく、勉強になった。
